For those of you that don’t know, the Calicchio trumpets are among the VERY FINEST TRUMPETS EVER MADE! The company was founded by Dominic Calicchio, from whom these fine trumpets took their name. Dominic hand made the very highest quality trumpets in his workshop / home in Hollywood, California. Many great trumpet builders learned the trade from Dominic Callichio himself, who was considered a master builder of very high quality handmade instruments. The Calicchio trumpets absolutely SING, and produce the most beautiful tone, very very clear, but with a sound, a depth, and a core unequaled in the industry! It took me several years to find another Calicchio 3/9 of that quality. The Ultra Copper Solo 3/9 is just a VERY SPECIAL HORN. The Ultra Copper Solo elevates copper trumpets to a new standard of excellence. It features more rounded bends in the bell, for less resistance and easier air flow. This trumpet is very free blowing. The unbraced reversed tuning slide enhances the instrument’s harmonics, resulting in a warmer conical sound. All of the slide sections feature positive air flow, to ensure an extremely smooth open blowing horn. Thick copper combined with the horn’s minimal bracing makes for a very rich sound that lets the instrument sing for you, while maintaining the classic Calicchio sparkle. This instrument was built by John Duda, a disciple of Dominick Calichhio, who learned the trade from the master himself. John moved Calicchio’s factory to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the Tulsa built Calicchio trumpets are now widely considered to be the finest trumpets ever made by Calicchio – and this is a Tulsa built Ultra Solo Copper 3/9. The 3/9 takes its name from the famous #3 bell first built by Dominick Calicchio. Calicchio has always been known for making the finest bells in the industry. The #3 bell was the largest flared bell that Calicchio offers. It produces a broad, warm, lush sound surrounding a powerful core and a dense timber. It is used by lead players, soloists, and in section playing, but was made famous by jazz star Freddie Hubbard, who played the Calicchio 3/9, which became known as the “Freddie Hubbard Model”. Along with the #9 leadpipe, the tone becomes very much like the classic pre-war French Bessons and the large bore Martin Committees. The tone is warm, luxurious, fluid, and yet powerful. But the 3/9 Calicchio is even warmer and more expressive in the Copper bell. Take it from me – this is a very fine instrument, and is very rare to find – particularly one in this fine condition. I say reluctantly, because I reserve the right to change my mind and to take this rare horn off the market. You will not find a nicer Calicchio 3/9, particularly an Ultra Copper Solo!
