History : This might be one of the rarest and most sought after Anastigmat lenses out there: the Graf Variable portrait lens. “In 1922, the Graf Optical Company brought the “Graf Variable lens to market. The American Cinematographer Magazine of September, 1922 describes the lens as, The. Is stated to be an anastigmat so designed as to be suitable for every kind of work. The lens consists of four elements, two of crown glass, two of flint, uncemented, and with an air space in both front and rear combinations. Introduction of a certain calculated degree of desirable aberration as well as change of focal length is accomplished by means of varying the air space thickness between the two front elements. The lens came in two models, Series A, with a maximum aperture of f/3.8 and Series B, with a maximum aperture of f/4.5. It is a lens that was able to do any task. You can shoot it wide open at F3.8 as a tack sharp portrait anastigmat (compared to the Taylor Hobson Portrait Anastigmat Series II). Or you can use it as a soft focus lens. You can also change the FL to some degree from 16″ to 18″. Its a very special lens and it might take some time to grasp all of its potential, but if someone does the homework, it can be a great compagnion for life. Im not even talking about the collectors value here. Since it was only produced in small numbers (especially the larger FL), you wont find many offerings in the last couple of years. The lens has a focal lenght of 400mm – 480mm (16″ – 19″) and does cover anywhere from 8×10 to 11×14 formats with a smooth and wonderfull bokeh. Condition: This lens comes in a good condition. The brass shows only minor wear and is fully functional, the aperture works smoothly, as does the soft focus mechanism. The glass here is in fantastic condition, i cant see any defects there, not even cleaning marks are visible, the glass is super clear. This beauty is does not only offer the nice looks, but also the great optical abilities for portraiture and pictorial work. The lens comes with a fitting flange and selfmade lenscap.
