It is Very Rare. The craftsmanship on this compass is amazing! The compass still works, as does the locking mechanism. All of the writing and compass directions and angles are easy to read. The brass will shine up nicely, but it looks great now, more authentic. The compass is 5 7/8″ in diameter and stands 1 1/2 ” high. The partnership of Sawyer & Hobby operated in New York City from 1840 to 1854. The two partners were Horace Sawyer and Jonathan T. Horace Sawyer was born in Bolton, Massachusetts in 1811 and died in 1889. Hobby was born in New Rochelle, New York in 1813 and died in 1883. Hobby was born in New Rochelle, New York on July 6, 1813.
