The Inland Revenue were formed in 1849 & were (amongst other things) responsible for collection of duty on all imported items. This item would have been used to measure bales of tobacco & record the sizes of barrels etc. This is an early item & would date to the mid-19th century – beautiful old item with a wonderful original patina – has obvious signs of wear and tear but still presents very well – all markings still crisp and clear – original and unrestored. 48 inches x 5/8 inch square.
