This listing is for an Antique 18th Century wood & brass Clock Movement, signed by the maker and dated 1740. It is also hallmarked on the front I believe- an S in a square with zig-zag jagged edges. It has detailed notes by following repairmen from the 18th century on, as well as many of their names. Some have slowly faded but could possibly be brought back with restoration. Possibly originally meant for a miniature grandfather clock or a wall cased clock, it is an excellent item for restoration and use. I believe the movement itself is complete, it just needs the pendulum, weights, hands, and face. The design is excellent for many rooms and a large variety of decor styles. It makes this an excellent staple piece for your collection, one your friends definitely won’t have! A great collectors item, for use display gifting or decor. This is a box sextant signed Banks London, which is Robert Banks who was better known for his microscopes, and his instruments were signed either Banks or Bancks. The company later became Bancks & Son in 1820 and made microscopes and telescopes for Charles Darwin. This is almost certainly one of the earliest designs of box sextants as there is a very similar one at the Royal Greenwich museum, made by William Fraser around 1790. The design is quite different from the later box sextants one sees for sale, and is in working order with the mirrors in good clean condition, and it has an internal sliding sun filter unusually operated by a crescent shaped slide on the face plate as well as one on the sliding shutter. I can see that 2 of the 3 side screws securing the face plate to the main body are missing but this doesn’t affect the operation of the sextant, and probably easy to replace. Nevertheless, this is one of the first box sextants made and very rare, so it will be one for a collector. It measures 70mm in diameter and weighs 280grams. I own what is perhaps the largest private collection of pre-1820 non-mechanical lighting in France more than 1,000 objects, including a French sculpted limestone lamp that is contemporary with Lascaux and Chauvet about 35,000 years old. I also have an extensive collection of antiques with protective motifs, including several dozen engraved sheet iron or copper alloy ladles, spoons, skimmers & dippers. I always pay attention to unusual skimmers, shovels, ladles and spoons, partly because a very obscure, small and incredibly rare variation in wrought iron was used for flattening successive layers of fat or congealed oil on early French lamps I own the only 3 Ive ever seen for sale. They are generically referred to as salamanders in the Anglo-American antiques trade, but Ive come to question the traditional origins and usage, based on the fact that the smaller wrought iron pieces were referred to by Raymond Lecoq (author of the finest, most accurate book I know of on wrought iron: Les Objets de la Vie Domestique) as having existed in larger sizes, for ecclesiastical chandeliers. Additionally, many salamanders are virtually identical in form and size to documented ecclesiastical incense ladles see the photo. Id never seen the hallmark before which doesnt say much there has never been any comprehensive effort to study hallmarks on Continental copper alloys, with the exception of Lochners book on Nuremberg. The only reference I knew of for this particular symbol/hallmark is in a very recent book, but it was the Cross of Saint François the anti-Plague Cross an 18th century rendition of the renowned Cross of Saint Zacharie. The Black Plague is usually regarded as a horror from the Middle Ages, but the last major outbreak of it in Europe began in Marseille in 1720, and continued to ravage Southern France for 2 years. The dreaded disease decimated Marseille at least 50,000 of the city population died within the 2-year period, and another 50,000 nearby in Southern France. In 1998, French archaeologists and anthropologists excavated a mass grave in the center of Marseille, containing more than 200 bodies. Circa means exactly that about but in the Marseille case, an incredibly specific date of 1721 was justified, which is a very rare event. In discussing it with a Catholic scholar in Louisiana, we both agreed that the best word for it was grim.
