Presented here is a rare, early brass rectangular belt plate worn by Maryland volunteers during the Civil War. Many of these Maryland sword belt plates went south with their volunteers and are occasionally excavated in Confederate campsites. In great condition, this handsome cast brass, slightly convex-shaped with a slight (not natural twist – see pics), uniform sword belt plate is a rectangular pattern plate that measures 51 mm x 88 mm. Constructed of solid brass that was impressed with a quality metal die, the plate face bears has a highly detailed rendition of the Maryland state seal set within an oval and all on a fine stippled background. On the reverse, the belt plate bears a 7/8 long tongue brazed on. No benchmarks or maker’s marks are visible. This handsome waist plate, likely an officer’s or cavalryman’s, supported the individual’s sword belt. Specimen does not have any of its original bright gold gilt. A similar plate is found on page 168 in a fine reference book titled “American Military Belt Plates” by authors Michael J. Duncan Campbell, O’Donnell Publications, 1996. An excellent, rarely seen, Maryland rectangular sword plate specimen that would enhance any waist belt plate collection or Civil War display. The photos should include every surface and a variety of angles. Specific notable flaws will be shown in specific photos. I try to accurately describe flaws so there are no surprises when you open the box at home. IF YOU WIN MULTIPLE ITEMS DO NOT PAY SEPARATELY. WAIT FOR THE COMBINED INVOICE. Marked “CSA” and what appears to be a unit mark “C CO” and “NO CO”. Roman numeral ” II ” appears in multiple locations. Most Civil War era gang molds I’ve seen have a single caliber. Some have multiple calibers but are typically confined to 2 or 3 sizes of round ball. I’ve never before seen a mold of this size that combines conical and RB in multiple calibers. It appears to made serve the specific weapons in use for a specific unit. It has both pistol and rifle calibers. From left to right measured with a caliper but approx, Conical 0.383, 0.433, 0.461 then RB 0.455, (2) 0.545, 0.612, 0.652. Condition is good, especially considering the level of damage usually seen in a hard used brass mold. It has some gaps and I doubt the projectiles cast would be usable. The block faces do not mate perfectly and the sprue cutter does not sit perfectly flat and flush. A blacksmith or other skilled craftsman could very likely true it all up and make it functional for practical use. The handles are missing with no indication of their precise shape. Almost certainly wood cylinder type hammered into place. If you want specific close up photos let me know and I will try to accommodate. Please be sure to view my other items.
