Measuring 18 cm in length, 8 cm in height, and 8 cm in depth, the device is exceptionally well-preserved and serves as a testament to the “Golden Age” of metrology. Technical Description & Composition. The unit is designed to provide a stable, known resistance for high-voltage measurements, often used in conjunction with a bridge circuit or as a shunt. The Resistive Elements: The heart of the device consists of several parallel, thin plates made of a specialized alloy-most likely Manganin (copper, manganese, and nickel). Manganin was the industry standard for precision resistors at the time because its electrical resistance varies very little with temperature. The Chassis: The plates are held in place by two massive, solid brass terminal blocks. The use of heavy brass ensures low contact resistance and provides the thermal mass necessary to dissipate the heat generated during high-tension measurements. Connection Terminals: Atop each brass block is a large, knurled thumb screw. These were designed to securely clamp heavy-gauge wires or “spade” connectors used in early laboratory environments. Identification Marks: The brass is stamped with several numbers, including a serial number (437344) and specific values (600, 075, 920). Complete & Functional: Unlike many laboratory instruments from this era that were scrapped for their copper or brass, this unit is fully complete. All original screws, plates, and insulating spacers are present. More importantly, it remains in working condition, capable of being used in a modern laboratory context to demonstrate historical measurement techniques. Original Wooden Case: The resistor is housed in its original mahogany or teak wood carrying case. The case features a leather handle with decorative arrow-shaped ends and brass hinges. The interior is lined with vibrant green protective felt, which has protected the brass from excessive oxidation and the plates from physical deformation for over a century. In the early 1900s, as electrical grids were being established, the need for precise standards was critical. A resistor like this would have been used by power companies, universities, or telegraphy firms to calibrate their voltmeters. This is a very special and quite rare lantern from the 1940’s. They don’t come up this nice very often so grab it while you can as I know this won’t be for sale for long!! The photos really don’t do it justice. This lantern was made between 1946 to 1951 and what makes it especially rare is that it pretty much all brass. The cheaper models around this time we made of steel and aluminium. It was made by Vapalux under the Bialaddin brand name. Now a little about the restoration. The original factory finish on this lamp was maroon over brass and over the years through use the maroon has been worn away and left the most amazing patina. So rather than restore it we opted to preserve the look that it had. After all it had taken almost 80 years of use obtain it!! We therefore cleaned the lamp first with a mild detergent to remove all of the oil and grease. We then lightly polished all of the metal parts to enhance the colours. To seal the patina in we gave all of the metal parts 3 coats of clear lacquer. It looks amazing and its ready for another 80 years! For the electrification we utilised the original stop cock base which we threaded to accept a vintage style E27 brass effect bulb holder. It blends so well with the lantern you could be forgiven for thinking it was always electric. To complete the vintage look we have fitted a vintage E27 Radio Valve Edison LED bulb. It looks amazing when its lit as it glows through the holes in the brass shade. To match the lamp we used 1.5 m of period correct brown vintage braided cable. There is also an inline on and off switch and a UK 3 pin plug. The lamp is earthed for electrical safety and it has been PAT tested. This is a stunning rare light and perfect for a table, sideboard, desk or even as a bedside lamp.
