This exquisitely designed and hard to find 1913 Chauffeur License badge was made by the prestigious metalcrafters Greenduck Company of Chicago, Illinois. The richly made badge appears to be copper plated with gold overlay on the right at the setting sun and lighting up the back of the eagle. The pin is adhered to the back with a brass plate, adding to the thickness and weight of this solidly made piece. In the center is a relief of an eagle, flying with a ribbon in its beak and a US shield in its talons. The border reads ILLINOIS MOTOR VEHICLE LAW, REGISTERED CHAUFFEUR. The year is 1913 and this is numbered 9696. MEASURES: 2″ wide and 7/8″ tall. Excellent Condition, as shown. The Green Duck Metal Stamping Company was founded by George G. Greenburg and Harvey Ducgheisel in 1906 in Chicago, Illinois. They started out producing metal stamped medals, tokens, badges, and even casino chips and soon included political buttons, advertising signs, and key tags. Green Duck played an interesting role in World War II, supplying the 101st and 82nd Airborne divisions of the United States Army with brass metal clickers. Soldiers clicked them to distinguish the Americans from the Germans. Two clicks meant “American, ” and four clicks warned of a nearby German soldier. Of the many political buttons Green Duck produced, none were more popular than their “I Like Ike” buttons for the 1952 presidential election. Another iconic series of buttons from Green Duck came out during the British Invasion, only this time not for soldiers but for music fans. The company produced official Beatles Fan Club materials.
