I can find no marks, so this is being listed as «attributed to» paul mccobb. There are scratches and scuffs commensurate with use and age. There is also a break in the top rim flat. It has been glued. And i don’t feel like it takes from the planter (see last image). I have seen this planter come up for sale a couple of times in the last 25 years. It has always had corrosion and holes and the shape of the trumpet bowl has been deformed and dented. There is a small dent at base of planter bowl, but not noticeable unless you are looking for it: it is hard to photograph, but it is visible in the third image. I have waxed this over the years to protect the metal. That liner is included in the sale. Please use it to keep protecting the planter. Paul winthrop mccobb was born in medford, massachusetts to raymond and winifred mccobb. His father, raymond mccobb, was born in 1892 and his mother, leontine mccobb (caulfield), was born in 1897. His father’s family was from maine and his mother’s family was from ireland. His father was employed, as of 1920, as a «men’s furnishinsg» salesman. He knew from an early age that he wanted to be an artist, and studied drawing and painting at the vesper george school of art in boston. He did not complete his course there, and enlisted in the army as a private on december 5, 1942. While enlisted in the army, he was in the camouflage corps of the army corps of engineers. He only served for a short time and was released on medical discharge in 1943. Mccobb came to prominence as a design and decorating consultant for martin feinman’s modernage furniture in new york city in 1948. While working at modernage, mccobb met b. Mesberg and mccobb would later be business partners in the planner and directional furniture lines. While he became best known for his furniture designs, mccobb also designed radios and televisions for cbs-columbia and hi-fi consoles for bell & howell, along with other household items. Mccobb’s other well-known furniture lines include predictor by o’hearn furniture, the calvin group by calvin furniture, directional by calvin furniture, the irwin group by calvin furniture, and the connoisseur collection by h. The rights to mccobb’s designs are managed by form portfolios. Maker’s and/or other marks. Please see second image. VERY RARE Paul McCobb Calvin Stool with Brass Legs Mid-century Modern MCM (2)
This is a very rare stool by Paul McCobb for Calvin. It has a white vinyl seat and brass legs with X crossbars. We normally only sell pieces that are in ready-to-use condition. Due to the rare nature of this collectors’ piece, we have kept it in its original as-found condition. We have not cleaned or disassembled this piece in any way. We bought this piece directly from its original owner. The legs are stable but could use a little straightening. Please see the photos to judge the condition of this piece. We are happy to send additional photos if needed. We are located in downtown Akron, OH near the Akron Art Museum. We take frequent weekend road trips throughout the Northeast, Midwest, and parts of the South. This is a good option because we can personally ensure that the piece arrives exactly as it is pictured. We thoroughly photograph all pieces and do our best to show any condition issues in the photographs. This is an extremely rare and impressive Mid-Century Modern large lamps designed by Paul McCobb in 1957 for the Distinguished Designer Series by the Pomona Manufacturing Company, featuring inset “Roulette” glazed ceramic tiles in the original red-orange hues. Each lamp features a triangular solid walnut body with brass toned decorative elements. Other notable designers that were hired to create tiles for the series were Dorothy Liebes, Saul Bass, Paul Laszlo, Millard Sheets, Dong Kingman and George Nelson. Height listed below is to the top of the shade; height to socket is 31.5 inches. Same lamps sell for thousands. Literature: Art & Architecture, June 1957 issue, two page Pomona Tile ad. In overall good original vintage condition. May show some signs of wear, marks, etc. Consistent with age and use. A wonderful addition to almost any style.
