Victorian Railways – Vintage Brass Builders Plate By Newport Railway Workshops 1911 Very Rare! This is a builder’s plate from the Victorian Railways’ Newport Workshops dating from 1911. Currently mounted on a piece of wood. The Newport Railway Workshops is a facility in the Melbourne suburb of Newport, which builds, maintains and refurbishes railway rolling stock. The workshops had constructed about 536 steam locomotives and hundreds of railway passenger carriages and goods wagons and trucks by the end of the steam era in the 1960’s. At its peak the Newport Workshops employed over 5,000 people and was the largest industrial complex in the Victoria.

Antique New Orleans Railway & Light Company Brass Button Cover. Measures 7/8″ diameter x 1/8″H. These would have been on the front of the operator’s coat. Company operated from 1905 – 1922 after which the company became the New Orleans Public Service Incorporated (NOPSI) and operated the city’s network of streetcars. Even though it could use a cleaning, the lever set movement is very attractive with its nickel and gold, two tone finish and excellent damaskeening. There are 16 jewels and the movement is marked “Adjusted” and “Safety Pinion”. I tested the timing by fully winding it then carrying it in a watch pocket during the day and laying flat, face up over night. In 24 hours, it lost about 3 minutes and runs for a bit more than 30 hours on a wind. I believe that the dial is original. As you can see from the pictures there are a number of hairlines and a chip especially near the 2 and 3. The case is not original. The front screws on nicely but can take a couple tries to get it started. The back cover screws on with no problem. The inscription inside the back cover indicates that it is “base metal”. Not sure what that would be but from my experience, I would say that it is brass. It has a nice design, is highly polished and possibly lacquer coated since it doesn’t show any tarnish. There are a few minor dings and scratches (see pictures) but looks much better than most cases. The beveled glass crystal is in overall good condition. The chain is new and included to protect the watch from accidental dropping but it is not really gold. (National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors).
