Very Rare Rare Art Deco Futuristic Woolfie Bird Lamp By Walter Von Nessen
Up for grabs is a good and working example of The Wooflie Bird lamp, an iconoclastic icon of the Art Deco period, designed by pioneering lighting designer Walter Von Nessen for the Miller Lamp Co in 1929 only. The lamp’s many classic Art Deco features have been combined with unusually whimsical and fantastical elements that set it apart from its contemporaries. The lamp, also referred to as the Peacock lamp, is 10″h x 9.5″ w x 7 d and is made of enameled brass and glass. It was produced in three different color combinations and marketed to be used in babies’ nurseries, children’s bedrooms and in “boudoirs” as accent pieces. Its Art Deco shapes were amplified by the bold use of colors and light. The bulb is half-hidden at the back and positioned so that when it’s on it reflects light off the Woolfie’s fanned polychrome enameled yellow tail and causes its faceted glass eyes to glow. There’s a working on/off switch on the base. Von Nessen was a great innovator in lighting design whose life and career was too extensive to summarize here, but a Google search will yield some fascinating facts. The lamp is working well. It displays beautifully, despite the loss of some paint to several areas, especially the back of the tail, whoverall effectich is normally not visible when the lamp is displayed. The edges of the round base are also affected but I don’t think any of it detracts from the overall effect. Of course, that will be for you to decide. Please look closely at all the photos for specific condition info, and feel free to message me with any questions. I didn’t realize I took a couple of shots while the cord was wrapped around the base of the lamp. I apologize for the sloppiness that caused.
