The Methodist Church responded to the need of the pioneers moving westward by printing hymnals which could be packed with the other possessions carried by the settlers. These hymnals were often the only song books when frontier churches were established. There are words and not music staffs because so many of the worshipping. Places had no musical instruments. The hymns are uniquely noted with the meter number. This indication reminded people that many of our greatly loved hymns can be sung to other familiar tunes. For example, “O For A Thousand Tongues” is a Common Meter song. In 1849, Texas was very much a frontier, with Comanche raids and outlaw problems. Five years earlier, the Methodist Episcopal Church has split over the issue of slavery. The year this fine hymnal was published, the gold rush began in California and the U. Began issuing gold coins.
