Very Rare Working Brass Clasp! 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″. Here is one of those rare gems that are really worth having or giving. This beautiful hymnal looks gently well worn for its 173 years. Very Rare Working BrassClasp. Published by Carlton and Lanahan, NY. Rare Miniature format size, 2 ½ x 3 ½ , very rare! 719 pages, 1148 hymns, plus index of hymns. Look at the pictures. Im sure youll agree that this unique hymnal. Is in Excellent condition for its 172 years. The beautiful embossed leather cover is in great shape. The pages are tipped in. Please see all the pictures and ask any questions. The Methodist Church responded to the need of the pioneers moving westward by printing hymnals which could be packed with the other possessions carried by the settlers. These hymnals were often the only song books when frontier churches were established. There are words and not music staffs because so many of the worshipping. Places had no musical instruments. The hymns are uniquely noted with the meter number. This indication reminded people that many of our greatly loved hymns can be sung to other familiar tunes. For example, “O For A Thousand Tongues” is a Common Meter song. In 1849, Texas was very much a frontier, with Comanche raids and outlaw problems. Five years earlier, the Methodist Episcopal Church has split over the issue of slavery. The year this fine hymnal was published, the gold rush began in California and the U. Began issuing gold coins. This same year, President James K. Polk died as did Edgar Allen Poe. Minnesota became a territory. Just dream of the history this little hymnal has seen!
