1900-1916 Very Rare Wooden Cased Brass Abney Level Type Clinometer by Stanley
This is a very early and very rare level clinometer of the Abney type by Stanley in a bespoke antique wooden box with brass corners. This brass Stanley Level Clinometer was only made between 1900 and 1916 as it was updated for greater military use in WW1. However, this version is earlier and was used in the opening years of this dreadful war by Royal Engineers and Royal Artillery Officers looking for the best sites to place artillery units to bombard specific enemy positions. They preferred this type of clinometer as it was so easily transported and robust being brass. However, they were replaced and many of the original clinometers didn’t survive the war as their owners didn’t. As stated this Stanley clinometer is rare very rare now and it is in. Good condition considering it is an antique and has survived about 110yrs and probably at least one World War. The clinometer is stamped “Stanley, Great Turnstile, Holborn, London”, being. 13cms long and with the perfect level of patina for its antique age, adding to its genuine authenticity. It consists of a small telescope eyesight and an adjustable tubular spirit level, which is connected to a semi circular protractor scale and. Marked in both slope and degrees you to + or – 60 degrees. This allows the object to be sighted and the level bubble can then be seen. So the index can be accurately set and recorded. The pictures do not do it justice at all, but are important to show the condition. Please be patient, we promise to get your item to you as soon as humanly possible.
