A very rare Pulfrich Refractometer made and signed on the case by Bellingham and Stanley of London. This instrument is in excellent condition for its age with little or no damage to the lacquering or black silk finish paintwork, The construction is of lacquered brass, glass lenses and cast iron stand. It weighs in at 17kgs packed and dates c1910. A truly rare instrument to find outside of a museum, the Pulfrich Design is a’critical angle’ design using basic scientific principles to determine refractive index directly, and offers much higher accuracy than the Abbe pattern. The operation of the device is beautifully smooth, the eyepiece assembly rotating 180 degree around the glass sample platform by use of the large capstan wheel. The sample liquid or solid is placed onto the horizontal glass platform and illuminated from the side via an oil or gas lamp reflected from the illuminating mirror and condenser lens. The rotation is measured by either of the two perimeter eyepieces, which are focused onto vernier windows in the rear of the instrument. Close study of the photos will reveal the superb condition of the brass lacquering. The three eyepieces, three mirrors, two prisms, and glass sample platform are all free from chips or damage.
