This HC Jones brass lock is one of their first earlier ones from the late 1830s to 1840s, which makes it extremely rare and hard to come by, especially in this condition with a very nice old verdigris patina! It was used originally by the US postal service way back or by a railroad in the area. It is hard to say which. This HC Jones lock is heavy and built for durability. It appears it was repurposed at some point because the chain was separated and then reattached either caused from theft or wear but from the condition of the lock in great condition I’d say probably theft. Imagine the stories this lock could tell given its early american background. Definitely a choice piece for a top collector.
