This listing is for an Ever Ready Plato Flip Clock. It is a great piece, with an ornate art nouveau styled body, intact glass (which I believe to be the original), and an ingenious method of displaying the time. This one is also specially engraved on the front with a memo from 1915! It is an excellent piece for collectors, hobbyists, decor / display, gifting, and more! This model of Plato clock is the button topped (or what some collectors call a mushroom topped) ornate version with a glass sleeve. It is currently not running, I believe it may be overwound and in need of an oiling. I have not opened up casing nor the movement to this clock at all to avoid causing damage. The bottom is stamped with the plato clock name, information, and patent dates. I believe it may be missing one of the stopping metal hands for the upper flip system, as well as the pointer hand for the lower deck. To the best of my knowledge the sleeve is the antique original. It is in excellent shape, with no cracks or chips. I believe with a little oiling and small repairs it would function smoothly. The Plato clock displays the time by what the inventor and distributor called numbered, “plates” that appear to be the original celluloid. The hours digits are stacked above the minutes with the plates flipping like pages of a book to reveal the advancing time. The Ever Ready Plato Clock was invented by Eugene L Fitch of the United States in 1903, produced by Conrad Hubert of the American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company (which would later become the Eveready Battery Company), manufactured by the Ansonia Clock Company and introduced at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. This clock is from the original production runs, and NOT a reproduction from the 1950s. This clock comes from a massive estate collection, and was extremely well cared for in a temperature controlled room. Please check back this weekend & next week for multiple other antique & unique clocks I will be listing! Thank you for your consideration, reasonable offers are always considered. Please see photos for details & measurements comes as is. Please feel free to check out a great post on flip clock fans dot com for further information about these clockwork wonders! Terwillierm, in his work “Eugene L Fitch and the Plato Clock” asserted that the original clocks have many variations due to many variable characteristics. There are 4 distinct body styles of the original american plato clock, this one is the button or mushroom top. The name of the clock is a play on words related to the time displaying plates, hence “Plat-o”. From the beginning the public has mistakenly tried to connect the clock to the philosopher, Plato.
