Offered here is a very rare and very attractive antique wooden plow plane by W. Sargent of Reading, complete with two cutters and in what I would describe as excellent condition for its age. One of the cutters is clearly stamped W. SARGENT / READING, ” and, just as importantly, the toe of the plane itself bears a worn but still discernible maker’s stamp reading “W. I have included a close-up photograph of that toe imprint in the listing (last image), as it is difficult to see at first glance but is definitely there. This is a beautifully made little plow plane with a great deal of visual appeal. It features a solid wooden stock, two round arms, a nicely shaped adjustable fence, wooden locking wedges, brass arm caps, decorative brass inlays/escutcheons, brass top hardware, and metal wear surfaces/skates along the working portion of the plane. It is a quality tool and not at all a plain, ordinary example. One of the first things that struck me about this plane is how well preserved it is. The wood throughout has a rich, dark, aged patina, and the plane presents extremely well. The fence has a particularly attractive moulded profile, and the details remain crisp and pleasing. The brass fittings add a great deal to its appearance and remain in place. The plane comes with two cutters of different widths, which is exactly what one hopes to see with a plow plane. One cutter is plainly marked W. Both cutters retain good usable length. They do show the expected age-related oxidation, darkening, and minor pitting, but they appear sound and entirely appropriate to the plane. The wooden wedges are present, including the main wedge for the cutter and the wedges associated with the fence/arm assembly. The brass-topped adjustment hardware is still present as well. The underside wear surfaces appear clean and well preserved, and the working end of the plane has not been crudely altered or abused. I have looked this plane over carefully, and I see no major apologies. I do not see any major breaks, ugly repairs, significant missing wood, or serious structural issues. There are, of course, the normal small dings, scratches, finish wear, and age marks one would expect from a genuine antique woodworking tool, but nothing that, in my opinion, detracts materially from the piece. In fact, its overall state of preservation is one of the main reasons I find it so appealing. This plane is not only a useful and traditional woodworking tool, but also a very collectible example by a clearly identified maker. The fact that the plane itself bears the W. Sargent stamp and also retains a matching W. Sargent / Reading cutter makes it, to my mind, an especially desirable piece for the collector of antique wooden planes and English woodworking tools. I believe this is a rare W. Sargent, Reading plow plane, and it would make an excellent addition to any serious collection of antique tools. It is also a handsome display piece in its own right. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description and show the plane from every angle, including the worn maker’s stamp on the toe. Most items will be priced to sell rather quickly hopefully! I will be regularly posting new tools on a frequent basis everything from hand planes-metal and wooden-to saws, spokeshaves, braces, bits galore, and many, MANY more. If you’ve been wanting or needing a certain tool, feel free to shoot me a quick message to see if I have one. Most questions are welcome. Just please understand I’m having to dig through three large storage units to find and post these tools. So the process of posting may (may not) be a little slow at the beginning. But rest assured, hundreds of “new” antique tools will be posted before too long. So don’t hesitate to shoot me an offer. Thanks for reading, and don’t hesitate to shoot a question my way. All my best, Russ.
