Very rare Georgian Arch Joint Sector Rule Ruler by W&S Jones London
Here is a superb example of a Georgian Arch Joint Sector made by W&S Jones of Holborn London. Arch Joint Sectors were superceeded by Plain Joint examples in the first quarter of the 19th century, having themselves superceeded the Full Brass Sectors in around the 3rd quarter of the 18th century. This Sector is notable for having 4 more scales than the Plain Joint Sectors, which are Line of Meridian, Line of Chords, Latitude and Hour. All of which have been beautifully engraved onto the brass along side the beautiful engraving of the makers name on the opposite side. The brass is unpolished and has a lovely patina to suit the age of this rule, it holds its position well when opened or closed and has a smooth action. It has one crack around the closing pin (which can be clearly seen in photo #11) but it is not a complete crack. Aside from this, it has the general small wear associated with used objects over 170 years old. Please study the photos as they form an integral part of the item’s description. This Sector measures 6 inches when closed and 12 inches when fully opened. If you require any further information or photos on this item, please feel free to ask.
