Pierret “Vibrator” Eb Alto Sax in original hard case, c. The firm of L. Pierret hand-built saxophones in France from 1906 until around 1972, when they could no longer compete, not only with Selmer (who used to “steal” Pierret’s craftsmen) but also with the rising tide of Japanese and eastern-European imports. The last “proper” Pierrets are the still highly regarded “Artist” and “Super Artist” models. Pierret also stencilled the Artist for F. Olds as the Olds Parisian. Pre-war Pierrets are superb instruments, beautifully made in small numbers, so some models, like this Vibrator, are now quite rare. The Vibrator had an underslung neck, patented in 1929, long before Conn and others. I have collected Pierrets for many years and bought this alto as a partner for my Vibrator tenor, which I have been playing with great pleasure as my no. 1 tenor for more than 25 years. In the 1920s and’30s Pierrets were used and endorsed by the (Saxophone) Quartet of the Garde Republicaine in France, led by the famous classical player, Marcel Mule, who was much later, I believe, involved in the development of the famous Selmer MkVI. The sax is in excellent structural condition – no dents and only a few very small dings around the bow that you have to look hard to see. The neck is perfect and a good tight fit in the receiver. The sax was lightly serviced last year for me to play on at home, but not repadded. It plays quite well on the old pads, but would benefit from repadding for serious use. Action is fast, intonation excellent, tone is full and, like all pre-war Pierrets, it blows very openly. I use a Selmer Soloist E mouthpiece on it, but it also blows nicely with a cheap Yamaha 6C that I have – it’s very mouthpiece-friendly! Note, it does not come with a mouthpiece, although it comes in it’s original (very solid) hard case.
