Very Rare Vermont Clock Company Ship's Bell Clock Runs & Strikes
Very Rare/Unique Wall Clock Here. Large 8 Brass Lacquered Case. Not a Tandem Wind – Runs & Strikes. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep it for yourself! Clock Collectors out there. A very rare and unique offering for you here. Do not miss out on this opportunity! Will put a video up of the clock running and striking in the next few days. Nice looking marine/nautical style clock here. Made by the Vermont Clock Company of Fairhaven, VT. The Vermont and Kilbourne Clock companies were actually only in business from 1898 to 1902. They were bought out by the Herschede Clock Company. And only about 10 were known to exist back in 2015. These clocks are highly coveted by maritime and horological collectors, per a 2015 Antiques Roadshow episode. And this example appears to be the largest of the three sizes that were offered, so probably even less of them were actually made. The original company was owned by Joseph Eastman whom also set up the Boston Clock Co. And then went on to what became the Chelsea Clock Company of Boston, MA. This is not a tandem wind unit as it has two wind arbors. The left wind arbor winds to the right, and the right wind arbor winds to the left. And when we did, the clock is now running and striking. The solid brass bezel is opened by the side button latch on the left and then is hinged on the right side. Bezel is securely attached by a huge well made hinge assembly. The bezel’s latch is working as expected as well. The clock’s face is silver, and has hand painted numbers in black. The grommets are in place. Some scratching to face around the wind arbor. Some other finish loss to the face finish in places. Beautiful blued clock hands that match and look appropriate to this clock model. Nice brass case here. Some moderate finish loss to the brass clock case. No dings or dents to the metal case. Same with the bell on the top of the case. The bezel’s glass is securely in place, intact, with no cracks or blisters. The clock has an 8 day mechanical brass time movement. The wind springs feel sound when keyed. The clock will come with a wind key. The clock has been running as expected, since we acquired it. When running, sounds very similar to a watch movement sound. This Vermont Clock Co. Clock case is 7.5″ across by the bezel, by 8″ across by the back part of the case, by 3-7/8. The clock face is 5-9/16 across. The clock sits in very nice oak plinth base. No markings on the base. The oak case with the clock in place is 13-5/8″ tall, by 10.75″ across, by 6 wide. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. Some information about the Vermont Clock Co, that made this clock (from the NAWCC Watch & Clock Bulletin May/June 2023). Headed by Charles Kilbourne, on May 18, 1901. Had previously been a wire manufacturing company. After the sale to Kilbourne, clocks were marked with the names Vermont Clock Co. Or Kilbourne Manufacturing Co. Under all three names-Fair Haven Clock Co. The companies were moderately successful and produced approximately 3,000 clocks between 1898 and 1902. The final version of the company, Kilbourne Manufacturing Co. Ceased all manufacturing of clocks in 1902. All three companies operated in the same building in Fair Haven, VT. He continued to use the name Vermont Clock Co. As well as the name Kilbourne Manufacturing Co. Apparently, Joseph Eastman was still involved in the company after Charles Kilbourne took over the Vermont Clock Co. A good testament of this is the fact that the Eastman-patented tandem-wind movement was still being used in some of the Vermont clocks. The clocks marked “McMillan Patent” most likely used the improved movement patented by George D. McMillan in January 1901. 664,866, offered an improvement to Eastman’s tandem-wind movement. The movement in the Vermont carriage clock (Figure 56) allows for a simple time-striking of the hour and half-hour. It is likely that McMillan designed the side-by-side spring barrel movement in that carriage clock movement; however, there are no markings on the movement to prove this fact. The three companies ceased operations in 1902, and Herschede Clock Co. The building was leased to other tenants in 1903. It is speculated that Joseph Eastman continued working for Herschede Clock Co. As an independent contractor, completing clocks and movements. 7 Clocks have appeared for sale by Herschede that are marked “Vermont Clock Company” as late as 1907. It is possible that some clock movements used in Eastman’s next company, the Little & Eastman Clock Co. And Kilbourne Manufacturing Co. Prior to Herschede’s acquisition. Fair Haven, Vermont Clock Co. Were the last companies associated with Joseph Eastman that manufactured a carriage clock. However, Eastman continued to found or partner in four more clock companies, none of which manufactured a carriage clock. There is no representation that the clock is in original condition, or will continue to be in working order.
