Antique Brass Hanging Store Oil Lamp and Burner Manufactured by the Craighead & Kintz Company of New England, with a stamped patent date of March 22, 1892. Many of the workmen that were employed there were European Craftsmen who specialized in metal work and special coatings and finishes. A large portion were former German citizens who lived in the Ballardvale area after immigration to America. C & K produced some of the most lavish and expensive lighting that was available at the time. However, due to the rapid change in technology from oil lighting to electric lighting, and a general recession in the economy during the late 1880’s, the company came upon hard times and began to go into liquidation. A fire at the manufacturing facility in 1898 destroyed the business for good. The relatively short life of Craighead & Kintz has made their very limited production scarce and very much sought after. It is almost impossible to find any examples of their work still in excellent condition. This particular lamp has the original drip pan on the bottom and the outside diameter has a heavy ring for supporting the hanging frame. The large quilt pattern tin shade and steel frame are not original to the lamp. The supporting ring is a genuine original from Bradley & Hubbard with a faint patent date of 1886. There are two removable screw caps, one for refilling and the other has a glass crystal mounted inside for viewing the fuel level. The lamp does not have the typical “The Daylight” marked wick rising wheel. Instead, it has an internal spring mounted lifting lever which swings against the draft tube and puts pressure on the wick so it can be raised by lifting the lever upwards. There is also a small key-like lifting lever on the upper gallery of the burner to assist servicing or lighting but these seem to be a bit fragile and we have another that has been broken out of the rim. The font retains the original patina on the entire top of the font while the bottom and drip pan have been slightly cleaned up to show a comparison. There is a new 2L round wick from Miles Stair Wick Shop. The chimney is a 8″ Tall x 2 5/8″ fitter. The chimney prongs have been replaced on the burner as they were missing.
